Worldwide, biodiversity has been in decline for many years. In 2010, within the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, countries adopted the 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets to halt biodiversity loss. However, none of the Aichi Targets were fully achieved.

A new post-2020 global biodiversity framework is to be adopted this year at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (CBD COP15). The German government is committed to an ambitious global biodiversity framework which formulates robust targets and, in particular, advances their implementation.
Under the UK Presidency in 2021, the G7 heads of state and government adopted the 2030 Nature Compact in which they set themselves the goal to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. In the Nature Compact, the G7 committed, among other things, to an ambitious post-2020 biodiversity framework and the implementation of global targets. This includes, in particular, the target to conserve or protect at least 30 percent of global land and ocean. The G7 also agreed to implement the 30 percent target at national level. Building on this, the G7 want to generate momentum again this year for an ambitious global biodiversity framework and commit to targets and measures for its implementation, for example on protected areas, ecosystem restoration, financing, the elimination of environmentally harmful subsidies and mainstreaming.
