Nationale Moorschutzstrategie
01.11.2022 | Brochure | No. 20015Kabinettsbeschluss vom 9. November 2022
Intact moors are impressive landscapes. They are unique habitats for highly specialized animal and plant species and at the same time a cultural-historical archive that allows us to trace our own development. They have a regulating effect on the water and nutrient balance and a cooling evaporation effect that is important for the local and regional climate. They are increasingly being discovered as recreational and adventure areas. In addition, moors are also long-term carbon stores and their damage can have a serious impact on the global climate system. In addition to protecting intact moors, the restoration and sustainable management of previously drained moorland soils are a central theme of this National Moor Protection Strategy.
The National Moor Protection Strategy is not only aimed at domestic institutions at various levels, but also at all social actors. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety is convinced that the protection of moorlands, the rewetting of previously drained moorlands and moorland soils, and their sustainable use can only be achieved by working closely with the local population, landowners, and those who currently manage the land. The National Moor Protection Strategy is therefore based on cooperative approaches and increased public relations work, which are intended to support a transformation process towards moorland-preserving forms of management.
