Katherina Reiche, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Environment Ministry has called for increased commitment of the UN with regard to the transformation towards a green economy in developing countries. At the end of this year's High-Level Segment of the UN Commission Sustainable Development (CSD) in New York Katherina Reiche stressed: "All over the world there are great opportunities for an environmentally-sound modernisation of our economies. It is not only industrialised countries which profit from measures promoting more sustainability in industrial production processes and private consumption. Consistent transformation towards innovative environmental technologies also has a positive impact on employment in developing countries".
This year and in the year to come CSD negotiations focus on issues such as sustainable transport policy, chemicals and waste management and sustainable production and consumption patterns.
Green economy is also a focal topic for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio plus 20 which will take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The preparatory committee for this conference will start negotiations on Monday in New York, too.
