Federal Environment Ministry supports projects in India

In India the Federal Environment Ministry supports projects geared towards improving resource efficiency. Within the framework of the International Climate Initiative (ICI) three million euro were made available for greater resource efficiency in industry and for improving recycling in India. In this way India can contribute substantially to global environmental and climate protection, a measure both the population and industry will benefit from. Security of supply will increase, innovative technologies and processes will be introduced in industry and new jobs will be created.

Rapid industrial growth, increasing consumption and the expansion of the infrastructure also lead to an increase in resource consumption in India. At the same time many opportunities to save resources or reclaim materials are not sufficiently exploited. The extraction and inefficient use of resources such as coal, copper, aluminium and phosporous have a negative impact on the environment and cause greenhouse gas emissions. For several years now the Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB) has closely cooperated with India in areas such as sustainable energy supply and climate action.

Within the framework of the new project studies will show how resource efficiency in important sectors of industry - i.e. in the Indian building and the automotive sector- can be enhanced and how materials can be reused. Based on the results of these studies pilot projects will be developed together with local partner enterprises. This will be accompanied by training and consulting measures for political decision-makers to build the knowhow necessary to establish adequate framework conditions and create incentives for a resource-efficient and climate friendly economy. A forum for a regular exchange, an Indian Resource Panel, will be established comprising stakeholders from science, politics, the private industry and civil society.

The project, which builds upon existing initiatives promoted by Germany, will be implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
