Water is the basis of all life and an irreplaceable resource for nature and people. However, our water resources are coming under increasing pressure. The last few summers of drought have had a serious impact on our forests, agriculture and biodiversity in Germany. This year, we are already receiving news of a winter drought from France and Italy in March, which does not bode well for the coming months. Conversely, almost two years ago, masses of water in the Ahr valley and in North Rhine-Westphalia caused a flood disaster.
These extremes are threatening to become the new normal as a result of the climate crisis. At the same time, the water industry in Germany is facing major challenges. Despite the progress made, there is still a lot to be done in terms of modernizing and adapting its infrastructure and water protection. It is therefore time to systematically ensure that water as a resource is used responsibly. To this end, the BMUV is now presenting a National Water Strategy.
