Affirming deep cooperation with China on Climate Change

In the framework of the sixth meeting of the Sino-German Working Group on Climate Change both sides agreed to strengthen the cooperation on climate protection.

In the framework of the sixth meeting of the Sino-German Working Group on Climate Change both sides agreed to strengthen the cooperation on climate protection. The Working Group took place in Bonn on June 5th, 2015 and was headed by Franzjosef Schafhausen, Director-General for Climate Policy, European and International Policy. Representatives from other German ministries were also present. The inter-ministerial Chinese delegation was led by Su Wei, Director-General of the Climate Change Department at the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The Sino-German Working Group on Climate Change was established in 2009 and has met in the framework of the Sino-German Climate Partnership annually in China and Germany.

The Working Group focused on the current status of the international climate negotiations, especially considering the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) and the upcoming COP in Paris. Additionally, national strategies to combat climate change and measures at the regional level such as low-carbon pilot projects and emissions trading were discussed in depth. BMUB also presented the achievements under the Climate Action Programme 2020 and in the field of emissions trading, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Furthermore, both sides evaluated the on-going bilateral projects under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the BMUB. The focus areas of the bilateral projects include low carbon development, activities under the Sino-German Environmental Partnership and Climate Partnership, energy efficiency in buildings, emissions trading as well as low carbon transport and electric mobility. The meeting concluded with a will on both sides to intensify the cooperation on both the political level and on concrete technical aspects in the framework of the bilateral projects.

The next meeting of the Sino-German Working Group on Climate Change will take place in 2016 in China.
