Preparations for the 23rd UN Climate Change Conference (COP 23) to be held from 6 to 17 November 2017 are in full swing. Construction work for the conference will start shortly. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) is now using an information module to provide information about the planning and progress of work at the Rheinaue park.
From August 2017, a tent complex will be erected on two fields in the park (called Große und Kleine Blumenwiese). The tents will provide space for the International Climate Change Conference to be held in Bonn from 6 to 17 November 2017. After the conference, the site will be restored to fields.
The information module installed today will inform all park visitors about the course of construction work and the temporary tent complex. The module is located behind the second roundabout at the Rheinaue access road, at the edge of the slope leading to the fields.
The conference premises of COP 23 are divided into two areas. Official climate negotiations under the presidency of Fiji will be held at and around the World Conference Centre Bonn (WoldCCBonn) and the Langer Eugen high-rise. Fiji named these premises "Bula Zone"; "Bula" means "Hello" or "Welcome" in the country’s language. The negotiating venue is reserved for delegation members of the contracting Parties, which has been the general rule at all global Climate Change Conferences.
The "Bonn Zone" will be located in the Rheinaue park. It will be the venue for events organised by the Global Climate Action Agenda, side events, exhibitions and activities in the various national pavilions. Countries, action groups, corporations, scientists and other non-governmental players will showcase their ideas and activities. Germany and its activities will be on display in the German pavilion.
Only a small part of the Rheinaue park will be affected by the construction work. Bonn residents will be able to access all other areas and lanes surrounding the fields. The car park at Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße at Rheinufer will be closed completely, the large Rheinaue car park at Ludwig-Ehrhard-Allee will only be closed partially. The mini-golf course and its car parks will remain open to all visitors. After the global Climate Change Summit, the aim will be to return the site has to its original state. Therefore, the area will be renaturalised after the conference.
