NAMA facility extended
Germany and the United Kingdom provide additional funds for ambitious climate change mitigation actions in developing countries. The German Federal Environment and Building Ministry (BMUB) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) of the United Kingdom (UK) called for the submission of proposals for climate change mitigation projects in developing countries. During the second call, around EUR 50 million will be available. Deadline for the submission of outlines is 15 July 2014.
To support the implementation of ambitious mitigation activities in developing countries, BMUB and DECC established the NAMA Facility in 2012 and provided an initial EUR 70 million. These funds have been committed to support projects in Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Mexico. During the second call additional funds for further projects are available.
In the context of international climate change negotiations, NAMAs (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) are considered to be voluntary climate protection measures taken by developing countries and emerging economies, which are embedded within their plans for national development. These contribute to bringing the respective country on to a low-carbon development trajectory. In most cases, however, financial support for the implementation of NAMAs is still lacking. The NAMA Facility seeks to address this gap.
NAMA Support Projects can make use of the full range of development cooperation instruments. However, they will focus on the mobilisation of additional capital investments to support the transformation towards sustainable, climate-friendly development in the partner country.
