The EU Commission confirmed European conservation legislation as fit for purpose and effective during today's meeting.

The EU Commission confirmed European conservation legislation as fit for purpose and effective during today's meeting. The Commission underscored the role of the Habitats and Birds Directives as key tools for conserving biological diversity. Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks had campaigned in Brussels to retain the directives in the framework of the Fitness Check.

Minister Hendricks explained: "Two years of hard work have paid off. The EU nature conservation directives are the centrepiece of European conservation policy. Their retention is good news for all nature conservationists in Europe. This means EU nature conservation legislation will stay fit for the future."

The European Commission announced the creation of an action plan for the targeted improvement of the implementation of nature conservation legislation in the coming years.
