Federal Environment Minister and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Espinosa agree close collaboration
The German government and the UN Climate Change Secretariat will work together closely in preparation for the international climate change conference, COP23, in November in Bonn. Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks and the Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Change Secretariat Patricia Espinosa agreed on cooperation today in Bonn.
Minister Hendricks commented: "In November we will welcome the world to Germany at the UN Climate Change Conference. The federal city of Bonn will showcase itself as a world capital for sustainability and climate action and make clear that it has a great deal to offer as a location for the United Nations. I am convinced that we will put on a successful conference in close cooperation with the Climate Change Secretariat, with the Fiji conference presidency, and with all others involved."
The annual climate change conference will take place in 2017 under the presidency of Fiji at the Bonn headquarters of the UN Climate Change Secretariat. Delegates, representatives of civil society, business, industry, cities and local authorities from all over the world are expected to attend from 6 to 17 November. Interest in the conference is already considerable. Around 20,000 participants are anticipated. The conference venue will be centred on the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB). A wide variety of stakeholders will have the opportunity to exhibit on the sidelines of the actual climate negotiations.
For Bonn, the climate change conference offers the chance to show that the city, as a UN location, has become a centre for global topics of the future and thus even more attractive for other UN institutions. There are currently 19 UN institutions with almost 1000 employees in Bonn.
The German government is already working in depth together with the Climate Change Secretariat, the upcoming Fiji Presidency, the Land North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Bonn on the detailed planning of the conference.
