On 1 February, Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks is slated to meet with Jan Jambon, Belgium’s deputy prime minister and interior minister responsible for reactor safety. On the agenda: the restart of the Belgian nuclear power plants Doel 3 and Tihange 2, which are close to the country’s borders. Ultrasonic inspection revealed cracks in the plants’ reactor pressure vessels, and several problems occurred during the recent restart of the plants.
Hendricks requested a meeting in order to outline the concerns of the German public living in the border region. BMUB representatives delivered a list of fifteen unanswered questions to the Belgian nuclear safety regulator FANC following an international working group meeting on 12 January 2016.
