Federal Environment Minister Röttgen: UN Campus Bonn will be strengthened
A new building for an additional 330 employees of the Climate Secretariat of the United Nations (UNFCCC) will be constructed on the UN Campus in Bonn. Federal Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen: "With this new building we provide the UN Climate Secretariat with the necessary space to fulfil its further increasing tasks. This will strengthen Bonn as a location for UN specialised agencies in particular in the fields of environment and development. I am delighted that we can prove once again the special commitment of the German government to international climate politics. The Climate Secretariat does excellent work in the complex negotiations".
The Federal Environment Ministry has commissioned the Federal Agency for Real Estate with the construction work. The UNFCCC located in Bonn will increase its staff numbers to around 600 by the end of 2011. This considerable increase in staff is linked to the expansion of tasks, i.a. in the context of the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol and the preparation and organisation of international climate conferences. New tasks arise from the growing complexity of international negotiations. The Climate Secretariat supports states in the technical analysis of the questions arising.
At present the "Alte Abgeordnetenhochhaus" is being renovated for 265 employees, work will be completed in autumn 2011.
