In the run-up to the German-Brazilian government consultations, a high-level conference will be taking place in Brasilia on 19 August with the aim of intensifying cooperation between Germany and Brazil in the policy areas forest conservation, climate change and biodiversity. 150 participants from the government, administration and civil society of both countries are expected for the conference.
The conference takes place at an important time. In light of the new global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the upcoming meetings of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris and the Convention on Biological Diversity in Cancun, the cooperation between Germany and Brazil will contribute to a sustainable global development.
The two countries have a long history of cooperation on environmental issues. Since the pilot programme to conserve the Brazilian rain forest was launched at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, cooperation in the areas of forest conservation, climate change and biological diversity has been constantly expanded and intensified. Brazil is not only a partner at bilateral level but also a key partner in addressing global environmental problems.
