Leipzig prize for sustainable urban development in Ukraine

Germany’s Federal Building Ministry and the Ukrainian Ministry of Regional Development have announced the competition for the first Leipzig prize for integrated urban development in Ukraine. Ukrainian municipalities and civil-society initiatives can enter the competition for the prize worth 25,000 euros.

State Secretary for Building Gunther Adler said: "The competition aims to promote the sustainable development of cities, districts and urban areas in Ukraine and to further improve cooperation between municipalities, policy makers, business, the scientific community and civil society. It is another important element of the successful bilateral cooperation between Germany and Ukraine."

Representatives of Germany’s Federal Building Ministry and the Ukrainian Ministry of Regional Development met today to launch the Leipzig prize for integrated urban development in Ukraine. The aim of the competition is to honour innovative investment projects in line with the Leipzig Charter on Sustainable European Cities that have been developed in cooperation with citizens and civil society and successfully realised in the last four years.

The presentation of the award, worth 25,000 euros, will be made during a Ukrainian-German conference on integrated urban development to be held in Ukraine in late November. The Leipzig prize and the international conference were agreed in a joint declaration of intent on cooperation in urban development signed by the two ministries in March 2016. The activities planned for 2016 are to be financed by the environmental technologies export initiative of the Federal Building Ministry.
