Germany within close reach of Kyoto target
Greenhouse gas emissions in Germany decreased in 2002. This decrease of 1.5 percent means that Germany has now achieved a total 19.4 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as compared with1990. Germany alone has cut around 240 million tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions - almost twice as much as the overall EU reduction.
Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin: "Germany has once again underlined its role at the forefront of global climate protection. Despite all predictions to the contrary we are well onthe way to achieving our goal of a 21 percent reduction by 2010. We will only succeed in this if we persevere in promoting renewable energies, energy saving and making a shift to more environmentallysound modes of transport. There is still a great deal of untapped potential in Germany."
