The Federal Environment Ministry is providing funding amounting to € 270,000 for the reconstruction of the drinking water supply in Lebanon. Before the end of January, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) will begin the installation of 30 chlorination systems in local pumping stations. "In view of the continuing tension in Lebanon, it is important to offer its people a perspective through practical measures to improve their conditions of life", said Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel.
During the military action in Lebanon, the drinking water supply infrastructure and wastewater management system in the south of the country were largely destroyed. Even during the initial emergency relief phase, which has now ended, the German Government undertook practical measures aimed at swiftly restoring the systems needed to supply the public. THW played a key role in this context.
The chlorination systems conform to German quality standards, and are intended to help provide a safe and secure drinking water supply for people in the region. The work is scheduled for completion by the end of February 2007.
The Federal Environment Ministry is providing a further € 87,000 to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to undertake an evaluation of the survey of environmental damage in Lebanon. This is intended to ensure that the assistance provided by the international community is indeed deployed appropriately and in line with the country's needs.
