Support programme of the International Climate Initiative (IKI)

The Federal Environment Ministry has launched a new call for thematic oriented programme ideas on ambitious climate and biodiversity conservation in developing countries and emerging economies. The ministry is seeking ideas for programmes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote adaptation to climate change or support biological diversity. The call is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze noted: "Climate action and the conservation of biodiversity are global challenges. But the solutions are global too. They come from all over the world, and are especially successful when implemented in close cooperation with local people. Our International Climate Initiative uses calls for programme ideas in a bottom-up strategy to find the best approaches worldwide for advancing climate action, mitigating climate change and conserving biological diversity."

The selection procedure aims to find programme ideas for 12 thematic areas, including the phase-out of coal, innovative financing mechanisms, the efficient use of renewable energies and the conservation of biological diversity. The IKI has earmarked 240 million euros in funding for the selected programmes. Depending on the idea, programmes can each receive funding of between 5 and 20 million euros. To be eligible, interested organisations must form larger alliances and submit joint programme outlines. Programmes should have a maximum duration of eight years.

The IKI is a central pillar of Germany's climate finance and of its funding pledges under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). IKI programmes promote innovative solutions, develop new political, economic and regulatory approaches and foster technological options and cooperation models. The solutions used must have an impact beyond the programmes themselves and must be transferable.

Since 2008, the IKI has supported over 600 projects and programmes throughout the world, with total funding of more than 2.7 billion euros. A key focus is to support partner countries in implementing their commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

One important aspect of selecting programmes under the IKI is respect for human rights and compliance with high environmental and social standards. That is why, since 2017, the IKI has applied a systematic, binding safeguard policy which organisations agree to adhere to in the planning and implementation of IKI programmes.

For the current stage of the selection procedure, programme outlines in English can be submitted as of today until 18 July 2019 (midnight CEST) via the IKI online platform. Eligible applicants include NGOs, business enterprises, federal implementing agencies, universities, higher education and research institutes in Germany and abroad, and international and multilateral organisations such as development banks and United Nations institutions.
