German Environment Ministry supports climate-friendly development path

By taking resolute action while promoting economic growth the Dominican Republic will be able to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by more than half by the year 2030. This is the goal laid down in the Dominican climate-compatible development plan that was presented at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban today. The energy and transport sectors and forest conservation offer the greatest potential for climate-friendly development.

The developing countries are stepping up their efforts to integrate climate protection into national development plans. With its new low-carbon development plan the Dominican Republic is playing a pioneering role in the region and beyond. The country strives to double its gross domestic product by 2030 while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 percent compared to a business as usual scenario.

The German Environment Ministry, under its International Climate Initiative, supported the Dominican government in designing the climate-compatible development plan. The project was implemented by the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, a group which advocates the protection of tropical rainforests in the international climate negotiations. Germany and the Dominican Republic want to continue their successful climate cooperation during the implementation of the development plan.
