Denmark has presented a plan outlining the search for the location for a final repository for low- and medium-level radioactive waste. The German public and German authorities can submit opinions on the environmental impacts of the plan until 23 January 2015. Participation of the German public in the planning procedure is part of the transboundary strategic environmental assessment.

Denmark has limited the search for a potential final repository site to six regions, which have been described in the plan for the construction of a final repository for Denmark’s low- and medium-level radioactive waste. The potential site closest to Germany is Rødbyhavn on Lolland just across from the German island of Fehmarn.

According to EU and international law provisions, a strategic environmental assessment has to be carried out if potential transboundary impacts can be expected. The aim is to subject plans and programmes to an environmental assessment in the course of their development and involve neighbouring states in the procedure.

Opinions and petitions can also be submitted in German and directly sent to the responsible authority in Denmark. Details on the procedure and the documents provided by the Danish authorities can be accessed on the website of the Federal Environment Ministry.
