Joint press release with DEG / KfW Bankengruppe
The Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and the Deutsche Investions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG) have for the first time agreed a cooperation to enhance support for private investments in renewable energies, energy efficiency and adaptation to climate change in developing and newly industrialising countries. For this purpose, the BMU is providing 2 million euros from the International Climate Initiative (ICI) for innovative projects with private partners (climate partnerships with industry).
The BMU wishes to support the dissemination of climate-friendly technologies through entrepreneurial activities. Climate protection goals cannot be achieved without the involvement of the private sector. The BMU therefore works to mobilise additional actors – in particular from private industry - for climate protection by providing funds from the International Climate Initiative.
The DEG contributes its experience of many years of financing private investments in developing and newly industrialising countries and gives advice for the implementation of projects planned. Climate protection is a priority in the DEG business. In 2009 alone, the DEG provided around 160 million euros for climate protection investments. By cooperating with the BMU the DEG aims to further increase its commitment to climate protection and to support in particular small and medium-sized companies in becoming international players.
The programme combines the support of private enterprises in developing and newly industrialising countries with the goal of climate protection. It assists in making better use of the great potentials in the renewable energies and energy efficiency sectors in these countries. The programme supports technology transfer through demonstration projects which are particularly well suited for establishing a low-carbon, decentralised energy supply. It facilitates the introduction and dissemination of innovative technologies in energy generation, trade, industry and transport.
With the International Climate Initiative, which was launched in 2008, the BMU promotes climate protection projects in developing, newly industrialising and transition countries. The Initiative is financed through the auction of emission allowances.
