German Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK)
The German Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK) advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) on issues concerning protection from the risks of ionising and non-ionising radiation. The Commission's members are appointed by the BMUV. They are independent and not bound by any mandatory instructions.
The Commission's members ensure competent and objective advice for the BMUV. To ensure this advice is well-balanced, the Commission is selected in such a way as to represent the entire spectrum of scientifically and technically justifiable views. The following fields should be represented: radiation medicine, radioecology, radiation biology, radiation risk, radiation protection technology, emergency management and non-ionising radiation. In the case of a nuclear or radiological event or corresponding exercises, the Commission on Radiological Protection is represented by an emergency advisory board, which is also appointed by the BMUV.
The results of the Commission’s consultations are communicated to the BMUV as scientific and technical recommendations and statements and are published on the SSK website.
