Administrative authorities at state and federal level
Authorities under the Federal Environment Ministry
There are four federal agencies operating under the auspices of the Federal Environment and Consumer Protection Ministry: the German Environment Agency, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management. In addition, several independent expert committees advise the ministry by means of expert opinions and statements.
State environment ministries
The state ministries form part of the respective federal stateโs government. Each state has its own environment ministry. The environment ministers represent their state (Land) in the Conference of German Environment Ministers, the Umweltministerkonferenz (UMK).
Federal ministries
In addition to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), there are other federal ministries, supreme federal administrative authorities and working groups at federal and state level.
