Conference on Agriculture 2025
14.01.2025 | Nature and Biological Diversity | Conference / ConventionBiodiversity on arable and grazing land – agriculture and nature conservation in dialogue
Published in October 2024, The German Biodiversity Assessment (Faktencheck Artenvielfalt) is the first report to provide a comprehensive description of the state of biodiversity in Germany. Of the habitat types examined, 60 percent have a poor or bad status. And the agricultural sector is particularly affected. Arable fields and grasslands, once teeming with life, are now categorised as severely degraded habitat types, presenting major challenges for agricultural production both now and in future. At the same time, the intensification of agriculture has contributed to this negative development. However, because around half of Germany’s land area is used for agriculture, there is great potential within the sector for measures aimed at biodiversity conservation.
The focus of the 2025 BMUV Conference on Agriculture will be on biodiversity, its crucial importance for agriculture and food security, and the threat to biodiversity posed by changes to the landscape. Spotlight will be given to examples of successful cooperation between agriculture and nature conservation. We will also examine what political framework conditions are required for such collaborations to be successful and to achieve a trend reversal in the biodiversity crisis.
In addition to the implementation of the Nature Restoration Regulation, this will specifically include looking at the demands and challenges facing the implementation of biodiversity targets in Germany in light of EU agricultural policy from 2028. In this context, the positions of the new European Commission regarding nature conservation and agriculture are particularly relevant.
In the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the conference will underline the importance of a transboundary and transdisciplinary approach towards biodiversity preservation and nature conservation in agriculture. As in previous years, there will be opportunities to get involved in the programme.
