On 26 February 2013, Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier and his Armenian colleague Aram Harutyunyan signed a joint declaration on cooperation in the environmental sector in Berlin. This has created an important foundation to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between the Federal Environment Ministry and the Armenian Ministry of Nature Protection.

Since the 1990s, the Federal Environment Ministry has helped the Armenian government improve the environmental situation in their country. The focus of cooperation will continue to be bringingto bring environmental standards closer to those of the European Union. It is in this context that the Federal Environment Ministry and the Ministry of Nature Protection of the Republic of Armenia are connected through a twinning project financed by the EU since February 2013. The two-year project serves to prepare for the introduction of EU provisions on integrated prevention and reduction of pollution through industrial emissions and also to improve the competitive position of Armenian companies.

Armenia has joined the Eastern Partnership that in 2009 enhanced the existing partnership between the European Union and Armenia and brought this partnership to a new level.
