Developing and industrialised countries adopt joint declaration in Poznań
Today, on 12 December 2008 at the international Climate Change Conference in Poznań, the German government and a number of other industrialised countries and developing countries with tropical rain forests adopted a joint declaration on concrete measures for linking forest conservation and climate protection.
Says Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel: “Action to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries is an essential part of the solution not only for the climate crisis, but also to fight the loss of biodiversity and to safeguard the environment and living space of indigenous peoples and local communities. For the Copenhagen Agreement we need to explore efficient and effective financing mechanisms that provide adequate and sustainable support while preserving the integrity of the climate regime.”
He added: "In any case and as a matter of urgency, we need to support developing countries to be ready to establish systems of monitoring, reporting and verification of emissions from deforestation and degradation. This is something we can start right away."
Germany has announced
To support the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) with the amount of 40 million Euro. It recognizes the important role of this Facility in providing the important readiness for about 30 tropical rainforest countries
To support, through the International Climate Initiative and implemented by the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, capacity development for some 40 developing countries
To support demonstration activities on the bilateral level in the order of more than 33 million Euro.
